MHS HAS GOT TALENT!

Mayfield d High School completed its 6th annual talent show and sponsors, Anita Granier and Jan Schorr, both stated, “This was the best year ever!”  The MHS commons was packed with last minute scrambling for additional chairs before the show began.  Coleman Austin, MHS senior and Beta Club President, was the master of ceremonies for the show, and he was the key element of keeping the audience entertained for an hour and a half.   With his genuine appreciation of each act and his bizarre sense of humor, he kept the audience amused throughout the evening.

There were nine acts of talent, including singing, rapping, piano playing, duets, and musical ensembles.  Each act was first-rate and included students ranging from freshmen to seniors.  It was evident that family and fans were pleased by the number of standing ovations given throughout the evening.  At the end of all performances, numbered cans denoting each act were placed at the edge of the stage and audience members were allowed five minutes to walk up and vote.  This “people’s choice award” raised a total of $645.10.  Gaby Arnett, MHS freshman, received the most money, $165.00; consequently, she was awarded the “People’s Choice Award.”

A special performance by MHS history teacher Kathy O’Nan and art teacher Brian Parks entertained the audience while judges tabulated their scores.  Ms. O’Nan sang “I Am a Poor, Wayfaring Stranger “while Mr. Parks accompanied her on guitar.  Judges Sheriff John Davis, MHS instructor Teresa Strickland, and D.J. Joe Walton awarded first place and winner of show to Gaby Arnett, who sang  “I Call Him Lord. Second place went to duet singers, Lee Scarbrough and Michelle Cantrell, for their performance in “A Whole New World” from Aladdin.  Third place was a tie between Matthew Bennett, singing  “This is the Moment,” and Austin Clark, playing an original piece on electric guitar.

The Beta Club Talent Show is the only fund-raiser that Beta members sponsor.  St. Jude Children’s Hospital contacted the sponsors several years ago, asking the club to help raise money for the foundation.  Sponsors began the talent show with St. Jude Children’s Hospital as the chosen charity for the event.  Last year’s talent show brought in $400, so the sponsors were pleasantly surprised at the total of this year’s show. With ticket sales, concession sales, and the selling of “Hearts of Love,”—paper hearts with the donor’s name placed on display in the commons—and the donations toward the People’s Choice Award, the total donations were $ 1,187.01.
