Mayfield High School’s Kyle Gossett named National Merit Scholar Semifinalist

Mayfield High School senior Kyle Gossett has been named a Semifinalist in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship program.

Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation on Wednesday announced the names of the semifinalists of the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.  According to a press release from the organization, these academically talented high school students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million.

Over 1.3 million juniors entered the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants from each state.

The next step for Kyle to become a Finalist, he and school officials must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about his academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance. Kyle last year earned a 36, a perfect score, on the ACT.

Finalists will be announced in February.  All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists.  National Merit Scholarship winners of 2024 will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July.
