Mayfield Independent Schools Announce Edwards as New Superintendent

“I am honored and grateful to be selected as the next Superintendent of Mayfield Independent Schools,” said Edwards. “I would like to thank the board members for having the confidence and faith in me to lead our district. I also want to thank Mr. Henderson for his last nine years of leadership he has provided for our schools. Mayfield Independent is filled with high achieving students surrounded by a supportive community.”

Edwards has spent his entire educational career in the Mayfield Independent system, starting as a special education teacher at Mayfield High School and as a middle school basketball coach.  In 2005, he moved to Mayfield Middle School for 11 years where he served as a health and  physical education teacher as well as the MMS athletic director, head football coach, and high school assistant basketball coach.

In 2016, Edwards was named Principal of Mayfield High School.  During his tenure there, he implemented the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system, increased the school’s college and career readiness numbers year to year while maintaining the school’s high graduation rate.  Edwards additionally promoted the implementation of new technology and new strategies in the classroom. He is also proud of the school’s IMPACT survey results, reflecting the positive culture and climate for students and staff at Mayfield High School.

With a Bachelor of Science in Health/Physical Education and a Master of Arts in Education with certification in Learning and Behavior Disorders, Edwards earned his Master of Arts in School Administration in 2013, with an Education Specialist Certification in 2019.  He also holds Director of Pupil Personnel - Level 2 Certification, Instructional Leadership - Supervisor of Instruction - Level 2 Certification, and Instructional Leadership - School Superintendent Certification.  Among his many achievements, Edwards was a member of the 2022 Kentucky Executive Leadership Academy, a finalist for the 2022 WKCTC Distinguished Educator Award, and completed the 2018 Kentucky Chamber Leadership Institute for Principals

Looking forward, Edwards said he is excited to get started, “We have a group of leaders and staff members that work extremely hard each day for our students.” His goals include maintaining and improving the focus of academic achievement across the district for all students, exploring and continuing to offer programs that will enrich the academic journey for each student, as well as continue to implement a common language of college and/or career readiness at all three schools across the district.  Edwards stated, “I am excited to get started and assure all of our stakeholders that all of the decisions that are made will focus on what is best for our students.”

Edwards is married to Mayfield Elementary School EL teacher Amanda Edwards.  They have two daughters in the Mayfield school district, Grace and Emma. He said, “This school district means so much to me and my family.  It has allowed me the opportunities to grow professionally and I'll be forever grateful for this.”

He will begin tenure as superintendent upon Henderson’s retirement on June 30, 2024.
