Closures, Cancellations and Delays during Bad Weather

Mayfield Independent Schools shares general information about winter weather delays and closures

Mayfield Independent School District leadership met to discuss plans in regard to winter weather delays and closures.

As soon as a decision to close or delay school is made, the district will communicate in the following ways:

  • A SchoolCast phone call
  • A post on the district website and/or social media pages (Facebook & Twitter)
  • A notification to local news and radio stations, that will most likely result in a listing on Snowman 6 on WPSD-TV and KFVS-12.
  • Various communications from teachers to parents during normal modes of communication (email, remind, Google Classroom, etc)

In order to receive the phone call, text or email, that information must be up to date in the student information system the school uses (Infinite Campus). Anyone wishing to update their contact information should contact their student’s school. If you have students in multiple schools, you can contact any of them to make the change.

While each year’s calendar is different, there are years when taking traditional “snow days” means we have to make up that time at the end of the school year, while other years allow for an occasional snow day to be taken without having to make it up.  These decisions will be made on a case by case basis and communicated to parents via the methods above. The state has certain requirements for days and hours of instruction that we have to meet, and thus that is what helps us determine whether we will get to have a snow day (no school work) vs. an NTI day (where students use Chromebooks to log into Google Classroom to complete assignments).

It's important to note that unless there is enough staff/student participation in NTI, the days will not count toward instruction, and still will have to be made up at the end of the year. It is very important that if the district determines the day to be an NTI day, that teachers and students utilize Google Classroom for communication and learning on that day. If students have any questions about NTI procedures, they can email their teachers for further guidance.

Decisions about closures and delays aren’t always an easy, or quick decision. We respect the fact that many parents work, even in bad weather, and they count on us to stay on our schedule so they can stay on theirs.  We also respect the fact that many parents feel safer, if bad weather threatens, having their students at home with them, or other loved ones. We take into consideration our students that walk to school, students that may be new to driving in bad weather, the safety of our staff that drive in from long distances and the safety of everyone that has to come onto school grounds when we choose to be in session.
