SB 181 Parent Communication
Mayfield Independent Schools
Senate Bill 181/KRS 160.145
Traceable Communications with Students
Frequently Asked Questions
PARENTS/GUARDIANS
1: When does this law go into effect?
A: June 27, 2025
2. Does this law affect the way I communicate with employees/volunteers?
A: No. This law is about student to adult communication, not adult to adult communication.
3.What are the district approved methods of communication between students and district employees/volunteers?
A: No other communication tools or platforms can be used except the ones below:
- Any application in the district provided G-Suite platform (which would include things like GMail, Google Classroom, Google Docs, Google Meet…basically anything in the waffle)
- GoGuardian Teacher
- The District App (Edlio - Conversations, which will be launched at the start of the school year)
4. Can a district employee/volunteer use any method or app other than the ones listed above?
A. No, not for student communication.
5. I’ve heard there is a waiver, can we just use that?
A. Not as a general rule. The waiver comes with lots of conditions that will make it very difficult to manage and very few would be approved.
6. Can my student be friends or followers with their current or former teachers, coaches, or other school employees and volunteers on social media?
A. Teachers, school employees, and volunteers may not engage with students on social media.
7. I volunteer in my student’s school. Does this law apply to me?
A. Yes, this law applies fully to school volunteers. Compliance is essential. If you need to contact a student directly, you must do so through a district-approved traceable communication platform or have a signed waiver from the student’s parent or legal guardian.
8. Does this apply to any employee/volunteer that has interactions with my students outside of school (like their youth minister, little league coach, their best friend's parents)?
A. Yes, the law applies when communicating with students even about matters that do not relate to your school volunteering. For example, if you take a student, who is not your own, to practice and you are running late, you would need a waiver in place from their parent/legal guardian in order to text that student that you are running late.
9. Why is Mayfield changing these processes?
A. This is a state law. The legislature is doing this in an effort to protect both staff and students from issues that sometimes arise in the digital world of communications.
